THE PRODIGAL HAS RETURNED!

Janie and I have been gone the last three Sundays. By God’s grace and goodness, we were able to fulfill a lifelong desire of seeing the Grand Canyon. We did see it…and it lived up to its reputation. We had never been out west except for business trips or conferences and we had never been to Nevada, Arizona and Utah. We talked about it for years and just never made the time. This year we pulled the trigger and went. We have as strong a staff as we have ever had and so I felt completely confident that our Father would bless them to do whatever might need to be done. I want to thank our staff for covering for me during our time away. Thank you.

By the way, I think you will understand why we do not ask our staff to advertise when they are gone. Social media is too easy for people with bad intentions to access. We do always try to let our leaders know when we will be out of town.

At age 65 our pace is a little different from the glory days. We would spend a day hiking and then the next day recovering! Our first week, we spent a day at each of the following areas: Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire State Park, Zion National Park and the Hoover Dam. Don’t get me started on the Hoover Dam jokes!

The second week we left Nevada and went to Sedona, Arizona. There we spent two days at the Grand Canyon. It really is awe inspiring. We would just sit and look and marvel at our Father’s creation. It looked like God made His beautiful world and then took all the left over beautiful pieces and made the Grand Canyon. We spent a day at Red Rock State Park and several other popular hiking destinations. We would carry our lunch and find a quiet place and just enjoy His beautiful creation.

All that being said…the prodigal preacher and his lovely wife have returned! I am back in town, in the office and looking forward to being with our church family this coming Sunday. I will be beginning a three part teaching series I am calling “You Have A Story To Tell”. This Sunday we have the Parent-Child-Church Dedication at the 11:00 Worship Service. And on Sunday, May 30 we are planning on Celebrating the Lord’s Supper and Baptism. If you would like to participate in any of these services, please let us know. PART TWO: WHY IS CHURCH MEMBERSHIP SO IMPORTANT?

Last week I wrote an article about the importance of Church membership. We live in a day when institutional importance and authority are challenged and even abandoned. For example, I grow so sad and weary when I hear someone say that the wedding license is just a piece of paper. A check made out to that same person for $100,000 is just paper, too…but I do not think they would take it so lightly. Some may take the institution of marriage so lightly because it carries responsibilities and commitments. That same feeling can be found in relationship to church membership as well.

The fact that something is a trend does not in any way make it right. That is a slippery slope and a very dangerous way to gather your values. “Let’s see how the majority polled and that will be my position” or “let’s see what all the people in this age group are doing and make that our value”. We have political leaders that seem to be entirely driven by polls and crowds. Their values seem to be the values du jour! What shall we believe today?

Followers of Christ have a foundation that is sure. We have the life and teachings of our Lord Jesus, the inspired Word of God, and the presence of the Holy Spirit and the fellowship of the saints. A church family and church membership is important to us because it is important to our Father. “Now you are no longer strangers to God and foreigners to heaven, but you are members of God’s very own family…and you belong in God’s household with every other Christian.” Ephesians 2:19 (LB) We are trying to build a church with members who have a sense of ownership with an attitude that they are all in! They are contributors, not just consumers of religious goods and services. We are family and belong to one another. The Bible has over 40 of these “one anothers”: pray for one another, encourage one another, admonish one another, etc. It is going to be very difficult to carry out these one anothers without one another.

In Class101: Discovering Church Membership we begin the discipleship process by teaching the basics of membership: Our Salvation, Our Statements of Purpose; Our Strategy and Our Structure. We want to make sure everyone is as on the same page as we can possibly be. That has helped to reduce and avoid some strife and division by making sure we all know, in advance, where we are going and how we are getting there. Not all churches do things the same way. Not even all Great Commission/ Southern Baptist churches do things the same way. Class 101: Discovering Membership lets you see how we do it. Hopefully, God is glorified, Christ is exalted and honoredand lives are transformed by His grace.

We love having family and friends attend to be a part of James Island Baptist Church. We know not everyone wants to join and not everyone will join. They are 100% welcome to come, attend and be blessed by the wonderful family known as James Island Baptist. When they are ready to move out of the stands as spectators to become participants, fully devoted followers of Christ, we will welcome them with open arms…and lead them through Class 101: Discovering Membership at JIBC.

WHY IS CHURCH MEMBERSHIP IMPORTANT?

We have a very unique opportunity coming up on Sunday, June 6 at 4:00. It may look like just another one of our Class 101: Discovering Church Membership Classes, but it has a bonus. Several of our new JIBC Staff members will be attending. How cool will that be that you joined JIBC the same day as some of our staff!

Now, back to the question: Why is church membership so important? Following Christ is more than just believing, it is also belonging. You belong to the Body of Christ. “In Christ, we who are many form one Body, and each member belongs to all the others.” Romans 12:5

I know there is a universal, big “C” church that consists of all believers of all time and all places. You will find, though, that most of the time the New Testament speaks about the local church, the small “c” church. Membership in a local church is far more than just having your name on a church roll. It is about belonging and declaring I am all in. Being a member of a local church is your way of committing to a local church family; declaring you are a part of this particular family of God; making it clear you are all in. We understand not everyone is ready for that level of commitment.

We encourage guests to visit for a while before deciding to join. We even offer the Class 101: Discovering Membership as a very good way to make that final decision one way or the other. At first sight, the 4 hour class of membership seems to be a big requirement. It is not if you are asking potential members to join us in following Christ and to make disciples who make disciples that change the world. I would rather raise the bar of expectation than lower it. “Pick up your cross and follow me” is a big requirement. We have chosen to follow His leadership in this matter.

We believe to be a fully devoted follower of Christ, membership into His Body, Universal and Local, is a part of the discipleship journey. Back in the day we use to see “church hoppers”. They would stay at a church until they disagree with something and then hop to another. The local family is devastated when dad or mom go “spouse hopping” trying out other families until they find one they liked better. Crude illustration…but somewhat on target. A current trend would be to be a part of several local churches at one time, never committing to any one church family. That sounds and feels a little like just being a consumer of religious goods and services.

We might lose some by raising the bar like Jesus did when he invited us to “pick up our cross and follow him”. Then again, we might continue to make disciples who are not afraid to charge the gates of hell with the Gospel; not afraid to join God in His mission to reach, redeem and restore a lost and broken world. Church membership is important. It is not just having your name on a church role. It is believing in Jesus, belonging to a local family of believers and committing to being all in!

Another Grand Slam Home Run

Janie and I have been enjoying watching our grandson, Noah, play some baseball at James Island High.  A week ago, we saw a player hit a grand slam homerun, over the bases, bases loaded, touch them all out of the park grand slam homerun. Unfortunately, it was hit by the other team!  Still quite impressive though.

 Sunday, everyone that came to bat at James Island Baptist Church hit a grand slam homerun.  The worship led by Pastor David and his team was outstanding.  I can honestly say there was not one thing I would have changed.  It was God honoring, Christ exalting, Spirit filled worship.  Well done.

Then the mission fair…oh my, what a success.  Another grand slam knocked it out of the park.  Way to go team. The theme was so much fun and the mission information booths were excellent.  Pastor Scott and the Mission Team (Judy Knapp, Mark Livengood and Susan Lowe) did a super job.

 And then the food!  Our Kitchen Krew is the absolute best.  They fried delicious flounder for hours!  Then turned around and prepared more for the Celebrate Recovery meeting Sunday night.  What a wonderful meal.  All of you were all stars Sunday.

 And we thank our Father in heaven for the most beautiful day to have an outside event.  The weather was perfect, no gnats…absolute perfection.

 Have you ever heard the phrase “There is no feast without a sacrifice”?  Ultimately, that refers to the great sacrifice our Heavenly Father made in giving His one and only Son.  We enjoy the eternal spiritual feast of eternal life and blessing because of His sacrifice.  Likewise, the JIBC family and friends enjoyed a feast of a great day because of the sacrifice of the many volunteers.  Thank you all for providing such a day of celebration for missions.  Great job…grand slam, out of the park, touch all the bases.

 I hope you all were able to go home and put your feet up and enjoy a well deserved rest!  Well done.

ALL ASHORE THAT’S GOING ASHORE!

This Sunday promises to be a wonderful day for our JIBC family and friends. Our Mission Team has put together what should be a great day of worship, mission involvement and fellowship. This Sunday is a Cruise Theme “Get On Board: JIBC 2021 Mission Fair”. Dress casual…cruise ship attire if you will!

Let me go over some of the basics. First, note the time difference. There will only be one worship service and it will be at 10:00. The 9:00 and the 11:00 Worship Services will be combined at 10:00! So by 11:15 we will be on our way down the gang plank out to the Mission Fair.

Second, you will receive your passport and be invited to stop by and meet those hosting the mission tables. I think you will be blessed to see some of the exciting things God is doing in our community. Who knows, there may be one or two that particularly speak to your heart.

Third, did I mention there would be a free fish fry? Oh yes, you will want to be there for the delicious food. I can’t promise for sure, but plans are being made for a barista to be present to offer gourmet coffee drinks!

Rumor has it there will be a Ship’s Captain around who will be very willing to have his picture made with all cruise ship passengers! He thinks he is on the Love Boat, so don’t disappoint him. Come on by for a free picture!

Our thanks to the many volunteers that made this day happen. May the end result be our deepened love for our Father, a greater commitment to hands on missions and an ever growing love for our JIBC family! Let’s make this a wonderful day of fun, food, fellowship…and missions. To God be the glory.

YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS ONE!

On Sunday, April 18 our church family will be having a Mission Fair with a “Cruise
Ship Theme”. Yours truly will be the acting Captain! You don’t want to miss this. Pictures with the Captain will be available…lol.

There is an old saying that I use quite often: You celebrate what you value and you value what you celebrate. This is particularly true when it comes to missions, evangelism, being outward focused. I love the fact that I have no idea of all the outreach efforts of our JIBC family. I think they are ongoing. I occasionally hear about one I did not know was happening and think to myself…”that is the coolest thing ever!” You don’t want to miss this opportunity to see, hear, meet and consider joining one of these outreach opportunities.

One thing JIBC does great is to support missions. We are the jelly church and we keep James Island Outreach jam up and jelly tight…so to speak! We gave generous offerings for the Lottie Moon International Missions Offering. And on and on we could go thanking God for the generosity of the JIBC family and friends. Now we want to raise the level. We are encouraging outreach efforts that put us face to face, hand to hand and heart to heart with our community. We want to move a step beyond “supporting” to actively engaging with the Gospel. We already have individuals and groups doing this so you have good role models and equippers. You don’t want to miss this!

Now, the ONE SERVICE FOR SUNDAY, APRIL 18 WILL BE AT 10:00 AM. There will not be a service at 9 and there will not be one at 11, there will only be one service, combing both the 9 and 11 services and it will be at 10:00. YOU REALLY DON’T WANT TO MISS THIS SERVICE OR THE MISSION FAIR AFTERWARDS. There will be a fish fry, we have David Martin, Jr. who will be hosting a gourmet coffee stand, we have 10 or so Mission Tents to visit, we have “passports” for everyone, there will be giveaways. You really don’t want to miss this. Like our old friend Sean Rheaume use to say “IN JESUS’ NAME IT WILL NOT RAIN!”

By the way, one more thing that will happen on that day…we will be introducing our new staff team, including our new Part Time Student Intern. You really, really do not want to miss this Sunday!

HOLY WEEK: MEDITATIONS AND CELEBRATIONS

We started Holy Week with a wonderfully inspiring Palm Sunday. It started with the children entering the worship service waving palm branches! Thank you Christian Teague for supplying the palm branches! The worship was God honoring, Christ centered and Spirit filled! I so love our church family and leaders! Thank you for all you do to serve Him and His family.

GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE
This Friday we have planned a beautifully contemplative and reflective service. This year’s service will be built around the Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross. We will read parts of the passion story and sing songs that will deepen our love of God and our faith in His goodness. We will also observe Communion together. Join us as we remember the Friday events of Passion Week!

SUNDAY’S COMING
This coming Sunday is Resurrection Sunday. He is risen…He is risen indeed! Part of this year’s Resurrection Sunday worship will include baptism. What a way to celebrate Easter. Baptism is a picture of the death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. It is a message inside the message. If you would like to be baptized this Easter Sunday please contact the church office at 843-762-0244 to let us know. We would love to have you participate.


FLOWERING OF THE CROSS
For those who are new to our church family, we will be having the annual “flowering of the cross”. Everyone is invited to bring flowers from your yard (or neighbors if you ask first!) and have them placed on the cross. We will have volunteers to place them on the cross for you. All you need to do is bring them. There is one little issue….we will not be able to have the cross decorated for the 9:00 service. We are asking everyone who would like to bring flowers to bring them starting at 10:00. The cross will be fully decorated by 11:00. We could not think of a way to have it fully decorated for both the 9:00 and the 11:00 worship services. Covid strikes again!


POSSIBILITY OF AN OVERFLOW CROWD
Since the pandemic began, we have tried to provide social distancing between rows of chairs in the Worship Center. While we will put out additional chairs for Easter, it may still be less than we need. So, we are going to provide for an overflow section in the Fellowship Hall. The service will be streamed live into the Fellowship Hall. We are asking that our leaders and our JIBC church family be among the first to give up their seats if that is needed. This might be a Sunday for you to attend the 9:00 service. It has been slightly less attended than the 11:00. Whoohoo….I love having these kinds of problems!
